Rehabilitation of Porous Building Components and Masonry by MICP Injection Method

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a novel approach that already being applied in various areas of construction. The precipitated can be used to reduce porosity and thus increase the durability deteriorated building components. This study investigates whether MICP injections are suitable for rehabilitation. Porous mortar test samples recycled aggregate parts masonry were prepared. performed without pressure with an injection pump. treatment effect was investigated after by testing porosity, strength microscopic evaluation. It observed multiple under result reduction pore volume porous samples. produced precipitates space increases density 1.59% weight 7.56%, which also results 48.3% capillary water absorption. tests show 45.16% flexural 35.64% compressive compared untreated In addition, process characterised. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirms mainly calcite formed, found structure MICP-injected analysis. Precipitated could detected especially near spots.
